Co-Creating the Future: The SPARCS Project’s Innovative Approach to Sustainable Urban Planning
One of the ambitions of the SPARCS project was to explore the potential and constraints of co-creation as a method for sustainable urban planning and continuous value creation. The objective was to establish a model for the co-creation of a sustainable and smart urban area in cooperation with urban development stakeholders such as the city organisations, businesses, educational institutions, research institutes, other organisations and associations, and residents.
Some methodologies and frameworks for collaboration and co-creation have been cultivated in preceding projects. The SPARCS initiative aspired to harness service design to devise novel, complementary tool that built upon these insights. During this process, Kera functioned as an experimental platform for the model’s assembly, which was subsequently generalized for implementation across other types of urban areas. Co-creation of urban mobility, energy and green infrastructure are used as illustrative examples.
The result of these efforts is a virtual toolkit for sustainable and smart urban areas. The toolkit stores the key results of the project in a user-friendly format. The model is applicable to all urban areas and urban systems identified for development, and it is openly available for anyone to use it.
