The new Espoonlahti metro station is connected to the SPARCS demo urban center Lippulaiva and enables the people of Espoo to find new ways for a more sustainable everyday life.

The extension of West Metro line and five additional stations were opened in Espoo on the 3rd of December 2022. The five just opened metro stations are Finnoo, Kaitaa, Soukka, Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti and the length of the metro line extension is seven kilometers.

Since the urban center Lippulaiva, where the Espoonlahti metro station operates, is one of the demo sites of the SPARCS project in Espoo, the extension of the metro line plays a remarkable role in promoting sustainable mobility that is an important aspect of the project. Lippulaiva, which was opened in March 2022, also has a new bus terminal that will open in the beginning of 2023. The metro and bus terminal make commuting and traveling inside the Espoo borders and to Helsinki easier and quicker while improving the sustainability of citizens everyday life.

– Metro supports Espoo’s network-like structure of five city centers and sustainable urban development. In that, compact centers will be built next to and on top of the tracks, and around them areas dominated by small houses, says mayor of Espoo Jukka Mäkelä.

The constructions and deployment phases of the extension were in action from 2019 to 2022. The first extension of the metro line to Espoo – so called West Metro – and eight new stations from Ruoholahti to Matinkylä were opened in 2017.
