The Legacy of SPARCS for Kladno
As the SPARCS project draws to a close, its influence continues to shape the city’s trajectory, with numerous initiatives still in progress. A key focus is the enhancement of the PED Sletiště that will become a flagship feature of Kladno in the coming years.
One strategy for elevating this sports-centric locale involves the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In February, Kladno collaborated with SPARCS partners from CTU UCEEB to host a comprehensive workshop on this subject, inviting colleagues from various departments and other special guests. This event sparked a series of smaller, focused discussions throughout June and July, yielding a wealth of intriguing findings and insights.
These meetings provided a platform for the Transport, Police, IT, and Environment departments to explore unique IoT applications relevant to their operations. The intimate setting facilitated in-depth conversations about the next steps for implementing proposed use cases or developing new ones. Some of the pre-established use cases included:
- Optimizing watering through green area monitoring,
- Crime prevention with IoT applications,
- Monitoring car park occupancy at PED Sletiště,
- Overseeing the operation of micromobility charging stations,
- Waste container tracking,
- And more.
One area identified for improvement is the need for more effective cross-departmental communication within the town hall. The exchange of information with the Grants and Project Preparation Department was particularly well-received, highlighting the importance of interdepartmental collaboration. While this may seem like a basic expectation, the reality is that many workplaces struggle with communication issues.
The most significant impact of SPARCS, however, lies in the realm of energy. Several of the proposed initiatives are already being implemented and will continue beyond the project’s conclusion. Energy communities are starting to emerge, photovoltaic installations on city buildings are in progress, and energy management strategies are being developed to support the city’s transition to carbon neutrality.
Improved communication and collaborative planning have emerged as unexpected benefits of the SPARCS project for Kladno. Yet, the project’s most profound legacy is the vision it has imparted and the scale of its influence across various departments.
